Blair Brown

November 24, 1940 - August 21,2021

Blair Brown died on August 21, 2021 in Albuquerque, New Mexico at home. He is survived by life partner, Susan Gorman, his daughter, Hilarie Brown, his brother Tom and Tom’s wife Nancy. He was 80 years old.

Blair’s wish to wander began when he was very young. As a young man, having graduated from Summit High School, he had an invitation to make a road trip across the USA! He and a couple of friends drove from Summit, NJ to Newport Beach, CA, making visits to National Parks along the way. From there he continued to Yosemite and back to San Francisco. He flew home from there!

Then, upon college graduation, from Brown University, he and three buddies made the Grand European Tour, driving themselves! He kept a journal on air letters that he sent to his mother. We still have this journal, documenting a Europe that has meandered into history and a young man coming of age.

Entering the world of work, he searched for a career that could facilitate his Nomad yearnings. The airline industry fulfilled that longing so he found a home with Eastern Airlines and began to plan his journeys in no time. A complete log of these travels would fill another book that we leave to Hilarie, his dear daughter and frequent companion, to write if she wishes.

On New Years Eve, 1984, in Barrington, IL, a fateful blizzard enabled fate to take control of Blair and Susan’s lives. Never mind that Susan lived in Barrington, IL and Blair lived in Miami, FL, each of them traveled as an element of their careers and they were able to meet up in American cities at first and then The Netherlands when Suzie accepted a position with the Dutch firm, Akzo. What adventures they had! These adventures enabled them to fall deeply in love while continuing to pursue their careers. Then, in January, 1991, moving on from their corporate careers, they made the decision to start PioneerWest. This is where we refer you to http://www.pioneerwest.net/aboutus.html

Blair had special qualities of his own. He was a logistician and planner, thinker and explorer,  photographer, navigator, always a truth teller, a lover of all the earth and its people.

His quiet intelligence and wisdom always guided me to think more clearly. His amiability and empathy touched everyone he met, friendship came easily, especially as we traveled. His patience and kindness, like his love supported me as his optimism endured. A man of principle and tolerance, persistence, bravery and courage, His clear blue eyes would sparkle, his smile light up.

Bruce and his wife moved to Topsail Greens in 1989 where he traded in his wing tip shoes for work boots and was a member of the grounds crew on Belvedere Golf Course for the next 15 years.

Bruce was a proud and loyal NY Yankees fan and could always tell a story about some obscure Yankee player from years past with total recall. He was a consummate story teller and entertained family and friends with his wit and warmth. He will be truly missed.

A memorial service will be held at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Hampstead on Friday, October 10, 2014 at 4 PM with the Rev. Pamela Stringer officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Summit Football Alumni Association, 125 Kent Place, Summit, NJ 07091 or the Pender County Humane Society, 1407 NC Hwy 53 West, Burgaw, NC 28425.

Arnold Besier writes to remember David "Butch" Johnson:

David wrote in my yearbook, "I do hope you always have a good time in the future,"  Raise hell, etc...." He signed it "Butch Johnson" although I always called him David.   His obituary appeared in this morning's paper.  According to the article, his twin brother, Donald, lives in Rockland, Maine.

Sadly, Arnold
