to dress or not to dress...that is the question
This topic started with the following announcement by the Reunion Committee (see 3rd web section "Reunion Activities"):

Friday 7p.m. ][ Evening festivities at the Elks Club, 40 Maple Street in downtown Summit. Casual dress.

Saturday 7:30pm ][ Catered dinner at Knights of Columbus Hall. The evening will begin with a remembrance of our classmates who are deceased. Dress: ladies encouraged to be somewhat dressy and men in coat and tie.

To which Tony Cardone sent the following email:

Why in the world would the reunion committee suggest that the guys wear a jacket and tie? No one wears ties anymore . . . I suggest that the guys wear whatever they want as long as they haven't slept in the outfit Friday night. If the committee enforces the coat and tie Yanacone will not be able to come . . . he doesn't own a jacket and tie!

To which Doug Woodring replied:

Tony, I'm 100% with you on this. I still have a tie, because I never throw anything away. But I'm not so sure I remember how to tie it! This would be a perfect topic for the "blackboard" category of Messages that I started a few days ago.

I think it'd be good there because, maybe it was Lulu, someone started a message chain that included girls wanting one event would be formal. Weirdly enough, I think people who want to dress up feel embarrassed when others are informal. You'd think it'd be the other way around. Let's open this up to wider discussion.

To which Carol Israel Allen replied:

okay, now I'll say something ..............

They said coat and tie because the class of '57 had that! Really. I think
with my discussion with Betsy about this, they are going to say shirts with
collars, no jeans or cargo pants. Saturday should be less casual than
Friday but not necessarily coat and tie. I think they don't want tee shirts
and I agree, but Friday come anyway you'd like.

Tony: Doug is right, put your comments on the message board and let's see
if there are other responses. What is so great about the internet is
instant communication with people you haven't spoken to in 20+ years.

To which Tony replied:

Thanks for taking the time to reply. I will go to the "Message Board" and
post my thoughts.

However . . . I can't believe that we would want to do something just
"because the class of '57 had that"! We were a class that lead, not
followed! ! !

To continue, I somehow can not imagine 68 year old men showing up in cargo
pants and old beat up jeans. Friday night at the Elks, if it stays that
way, should be a "dress as you want". I'm certain that our class members
will not make fools of themselves. Now for Saturday . . Perhaps if
Saturday's dinner/dance took place at the Canoe Brook CC the jacket and tie
program would be correct . . . however, for the K of C it is my opinion that
slacks, sweater, turtle necks, and if you want to, wear a jacket, would
work.

Now we go to the gals . . . well, they will have to speak up for themselves.
I will not go there! Lets hear it from the ladies and Carol you can go
first . . .you have worked so hard to get the reunion organized, worked so
hard to get the web site up and running, have handled everything with
dedication and class that your opinion will go a long way!

"That's my story and I'm sticking to it" . . .

To which Donna Shrock Jewett replied:

Even though we live in a very rural area, Tom and I still have dress up clothes which we do not get to wear very often, so I do understand why some people would like to use the reunion as an opportunity to "dress up". The truth, however, is that peole do not dress up these days and most of us want to be comfortable. Also, I do not think we want to put classmates in a position that they would feel out of place if they were not in the latest fashion. I agree with Tony, no one is going to dress inappropriately."

To me the important thing is that everyone will want to come, we make everyone feel welcome and everyone has a great time seeing old friends and establishing new friendships.

To which Sue Scriggins Palmer replied:

I'm with Tony and Donna...I don't kow what psycological damage could be done
to those who want to dress and find others haven't, but maybe we could make
"dressing up" optional anyway. That way those who have the gear can show it
off, and the rest of us can be the audience, comfortable and appreciative.

To which Tony replied:

To all . . .

Yanacone wants you all to know that he is still looking for the cheer leader
uniform that he put on in 1958 . . . and if it does not show up he will
wear his TUX with his WHITE SNEAKERS . . . and not a $500.00 pair of
sneakers!

Believe it or not, he as seven (7) yes seven (7) pair of white sneakers, US
Keds ($9.00/Pair) I believe, as he wears a different pair each day . . .
that's because his feet stink ! ! ! !

He may have just bought the farm but I will let you decide when you see him
at the 50th.

Doug:

I have solved the problem regarding what to wear to the "50th". Go to "Photo Album". Scroll down to Brayton School. Click on "Brayton School - 6th grade play. Check out the outfit that Gil Owren is wearing. Send that picture to the committee and have them make up enough of the outfit for all the male classmates (Maybe the women also) Yanacone will still want to be a cheer leader and when you see him at the 50th you will understand.

How's that for problem solving . . . Now that's what I'm talking about!

Scrig, Doug, and all classmates:

Well, it looks like we are back to the jacket and tie for the Saturday night dinner/dance! Hey, if that's the way it has to be, so be it! Just keep in mind that Yanacone will not be able to attend. As I indicated in an earlier message, he does not own a tie or jacket and he's to cheap to go out and buy them. I know, Gil can lend him one of his ties and jacket . . . or better yet, Yanacone can wear his SHS cheerleader outfit! I'd like to see some one throw out a SHS cheerleader!

See you guys at the "50th" with or without a tie! ! ! !

Regards to all . . .

Scrig, Doug, and Classmates . . . well, it;s over, and it appeared that we all came dressed the way we should have. Looks like I was wrong about Yanacone, since he arrived in his TUX! He must have attended a wake somewhere and took it off of the dead guy!

Hope all had a good time . . . I know I did!

Regards To All
